The Town of Milton will receive more than $7.2 million for public transit infrastructure through the Canada Public Transit Fund’s (CPTF) baseline funding stream, Member of Parliament Adam van Koeverden and Mayor Gordon Krantz announced.

The funding, to be delivered over 10 years from 2026 to 2036, will support key improvements to Milton’s transit system.

This investment will provide predictable funding, allowing Milton to plan long-term upgrades, replacements, and modernization of its transit and active transportation infrastructure. As transit ridership in Milton grows rapidly, the funding will help address the needs of the expanding community. However, the baseline funding is conditional upon Milton submitting a capital plan and signing a funding agreement.

“The federal government is investing more than $7 million over 10 years so Milton can benefit from updated public transit that connects residents to places, services, family and friends,” said van Koeverden, speaking on behalf of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. “By making this investment, the federal government is helping to decrease pollution and traffic congestion while making life more affordable.”

Mayor Krantz thanked the federal government, calling the announcement “a pivotal moment” for the town.

“This significant investment of more than $7.2 million through the Canada Public Transit Fund will enable us to enhance our public transit system, ensuring it meets the needs of our growing population,” Krantz said. “Reliable and modern transit infrastructure is vital for supporting our residents, fostering economic growth, and reducing our environmental footprint.”

Tony D’Alessandro, Milton’s director of transit services, said the funding will play a key role in the town’s future plans.

“This substantial investment through the Canada Public Transit Fund is a testament to Milton’s commitment to enhancing our transit services,” he said. “With the endorsement of our Five-Year Service Plan and Master Plan Update, we are poised to implement strategic improvements that will expand our network by more than 150 per cent by 2041.”

“This funding will be instrumental in realizing our vision of a safe, reliable and integrated transit system that meets the evolving needs of our growing community,” he added.
