Major winter storm to hit Halton, Milton and southern Ontario with heavy snow, hazardous travel

Winter weather alerts are widespread across Ontario as a major storm is set to bring significant snowfall and challenging travel conditions beginning Wednesday. Environment Canada has issued warnings, urging residents to prepare for difficult road conditions, potential power disruptions, and possible school or event cancellations.

The storm, expected to impact southern Ontario from Wednesday through Thursday, could bring more than 20 cm of snow to many areas. The Highway 401 corridor and much of the region are in the direct path of the heaviest snowfall if the system follows a southerly track. For areas further north, including the northern GTA, Cottage Country, and extending east to Ottawa, Environment Canada forecasts snowfall totals ranging from 20 to 40 cm.

While the exact path of the system remains uncertain, meteorologists warn that if the storm shifts south, snowfall amounts could be significantly higher. In some regions, the snow may transition to freezing rain or rain late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, increasing the risk of icy conditions on roads and sidewalks.

Poor visibility from heavy blowing snow, coupled with the potential for freezing rain, could create treacherous driving conditions. Authorities advise motorists to avoid non-essential travel and check highway conditions before heading out. Commuters are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and adjust travel plans accordingly.

With this being the second major snowstorm of the season following last weekend’s snowfall in Toronto, another system is already on the horizon for later in the week, which could further contribute to accumulation totals.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including stocking up on essentials, ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, and preparing for potential delays or cancellations. Officials stress the importance of staying updated on weather forecasts and heeding warnings from local authorities.
