Carlos Garcia, a recent immigrant to Milton from Colombia, is already embracing the Shop Main Street Canada, Support Local campaign, a movement to encourage residents to shop and dine locally. Garcia, who is new to both Milton and Canada, appreciates the variety of local businesses, from food to fashion, and believes shopping local supports both the economy and the community.
“Milton has such a diverse range of local businesses. By shopping local, you’re not only helping the economy, but you’re also supporting people from your own community. I make it a point to shop and eat locally whenever I can—there’s always something new to discover,” said Garcia, who is proud to participate in the campaign.
Garcia also recalled his experience living in the U.S., where many Colombians were recently deported, which has made him more appreciative of the opportunity to contribute to his new community in Milton.
The Downtown Milton Business Improvement Area (DMBIA) is proudly backing the Shop Main Street Canada, Support Local campaign, urging residents to make a positive impact on the local economy by supporting downtown businesses. This initiative is part of a larger movement aimed at fostering small business growth across Canada by encouraging residents to make intentional choices to shop, dine, and explore locally.
“Shopping local is a simple but powerful way to make a difference,” said a DMBIA representative. “From shopping at local stores to dining at local restaurants, every purchase helps to strengthen our community and support the businesses that make downtown Milton a unique and vibrant place.”
The DMBIA highlights the diverse range of businesses in downtown Milton, from retail goods to dining experiences. As part of the campaign, residents are encouraged to visit local shops, dine at local restaurants, and choose Canadian-made products.
“I’ve always believed in the power of shopping local, and this campaign is a great way to remind people of its importance. Milton has so many incredible businesses, and supporting them keeps our community strong,” said Raj Patel, a local business owner. “I always try to buy from local stores, and it’s good to see the DMBIA highlighting this effort.”
For longtime resident Emma Thompson, shopping local is a no-brainer. “I love walking down Main Street, grabbing a coffee, and popping into different stores. The personal service you get from local businesses is unmatched, and it feels good knowing you’re helping to keep things thriving in our town,” she said.
The Shop Main Street Canada campaign reminds Canadians of the benefits of supporting local businesses. By shopping locally, residents help boost the local economy, sustain jobs, and create a more vibrant community.
