As the 2025 federal election approaches, the Town of Milton is outlining its key priorities to ensure the local community’s needs are addressed and its future growth is supported. With ongoing population growth and shifting community requirements, Milton is calling on all federal parties and local candidates to commit to actions that will strengthen the town’s growth, livability, and local economy.
“For 25 years, Milton has experienced significant growth, contributing a range of housing and economic options to Canada,” said Mayor Gord Krantz. “It is critical that we receive strong federal support to help us deliver on our future growth plans out to 2051.”
Milton’s Federal Priorities
Expand Transit to Support Growth
Milton is actively planning for future growth, including 21,000 new homes by 2031. To meet the needs of its growing population, the town is advocating for increased transit investment, including:
Investment in Two-Way All-Day GO service to the Milton GO Station
Funding for a new GO station in the future Agerton neighbourhood
Stable, long-term funding to expand Milton Transit services
Modernize Funding and Improve Affordability
Milton is calling for a shift in the current funding model that places an increasing burden on local taxpayers. The town is requesting:
A new federal–municipal funding model that better reflects population growth and economic development
Expanded federal funding to include both operating and capital costs, beyond just infrastructure
Financial support to mitigate the impact of the proposed Canadian National (CN) Intermodal project on the town’s economy
Build Infrastructure to Support Housing
With Milton’s population expected to exceed 400,000 by 2051, the town is working to create more housing options for residents. To support this, Milton is requesting:
Continued federal support for the planning and approval of residential development
Stronger coordination among all levels of government to accelerate housing projects
Long-term investments in key infrastructure, such as roads, water systems, and sewers, to service new neighbourhoods
Sustain Economic Momentum
Milton’s economy has been thriving, with significant growth in sectors such as professional, scientific, and technical services. Since 2018, this sector has seen a 64 per cent increase. To keep this momentum going, the town is seeking:
Federal investment in emerging industries and business development programs, including FedDev Ontario
Support for placemaking initiatives that will help attract and retain a skilled workforce
Federal action to address the loss of key employment lands due to the CN Intermodal Project and its limited economic benefits
Action to reduce economic uncertainty and provide support for local businesses
“We’re asking candidates to recognize the vital role municipalities play in delivering services and to work with us to build a strong future,” said Mayor Krantz. “Our priorities reflect the needs of our residents and businesses. Milton has a consistent record of planning responsibly and getting results—now, we need a federal partner who shares our vision.”
