Milton Urges Drivers to Slow Down and Stay Alert as Students Return to School

Milton is urging residents to prioritize road safety as students return to school this September. Beginning Monday, August 25, school zone flashing lights have been activated across the town to remind drivers to slow down to 40 km/h when lights are flashing near designated schools. With increased traffic and the presence of young pedestrians, officials are emphasizing caution and attentiveness.

Mayor Gord Krantz highlighted the importance of community awareness during this busy time, stating, “Each September, it’s important to be alert as roads get busier with some of our youngest road users. Let’s be road wise and follow traffic rules so that we can protect students, their families, and our entire community.”

Pedestrian crossings are a key focus, with the Town encouraging students and families to use marked crosswalks and intersections equipped with pedestrian signals. Some crossings feature rectangular rapid flashing beacons, which pedestrians can activate to alert drivers. Officials remind pedestrians to wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before crossing.

Crossing guards will be stationed near elementary schools to assist children and other pedestrians. Drivers are legally required to stop in all directions when a crossing guard raises their sign and must wait until the guard and all pedestrians have cleared the roadway before proceeding. The Town’s website provides detailed schedules and locations for crossing guards by school.

To reduce congestion and improve safety, many schools offer designated drop-off zones, commonly referred to as “Kiss and Rides.” These areas may be prioritized for kindergarten students and children with special needs. Drivers are expected to obey all posted signage, and by-law officers will monitor these zones using licence plate recognition technology.

Coinciding with the start of school, the Halton Regional Police Service has launched its annual traffic safety campaign, Project Safe Start. Running from August 25 to September 5, the initiative targets speeding, seat belt use, stop sign compliance, and school bus safety. Officers will be focusing on school zones and high-traffic areas during peak hours.

The Town of Milton encourages residents to visit its School Safety webpage for additional tips and resources tailored to students, parents, and drivers. Throughout September, traffic safety reminders will be shared via the Town’s social media channels. As the community transitions into the school year, officials are calling on everyone to do their part in keeping Milton’s roads safe. Whether behind the wheel, on foot, or on a bike, staying alert and following the rules can make all the difference.
