Halton Healthcare has received provincial approval and funding to expand hospital capacity across the region, adding up to 123 acute care beds at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and Milton District Hospital (MDH) over the next two years.

The project will build out previously shelled space at OTMH and add new capacity at MDH, improving access to timely hospital care and creating construction and long-term healthcare jobs. Shelled space refers to unfinished areas designed to allow hospitals to grow with community needs.

“The expansion is about putting patients first. As our communities grow, we’re making sure our hospitals grow with them so that every person who needs care can receive it when they need it most,” said Melissa Farrell, president and CEO of Halton Healthcare.

Ontario hospitals are facing unprecedented demand, particularly as the number of residents aged 75 and older in Halton is expected to double in the next 20 years. The new patient spaces will feature modern private and semi-private rooms, designed to promote comfort, dignity, and recovery. Construction within existing infrastructure is expected to reduce disruption and shorten timelines.

Provincial leaders praised the investment as a critical step in expanding healthcare access in the region.

“Our government is making historic investments to build a stronger, more connected health-care system that puts patients first,” said Premier Doug Ford. “The expansion of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Milton District Hospital means more families will get the convenient, world-class care they deserve.”

Other officials echoed the importance of the project, including Health Minister Sylvia Jones, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, and MPPs representing Oakville and Milton ridings. Local mayors and the Halton Regional Chair also highlighted the initiative’s benefits for residents.

“This investment means more patients in Milton will get the care they need, closer to home,” said Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton added, “It feels so great to have a provincial government that does its part to keep up with the growth we all are working to accommodate.”

The expansion is expected to be completed within two years, ensuring Halton Healthcare can meet the growing demands of its community while enhancing capacity across the regional health system.
