Ontario is improving the busy Union Station GO rail corridor to better manage congestion, increase service, and support the growing number of commuters across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
The improvements include an upgrade and expansion of the Don Yard facility to provide additional train storage and train servicing capabilities close to Union Station. “This announcement is another step forward on delivering GO Regional Express Rail- a transformative plan that will help keep the region moving for generations to come,” Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca said. This will allow Metrolinx to better meet future growth and demand for GO and UP Express service, while reducing fuel consumption and costs.
This project supports Ontario’s GO Regional Express Rail (RER) plan. GO RER represents a historic investment in GO Transit that will bring faster, more frequent and more convenient transit service to communities across the GTHA by 2025. The GO RER includes the “Georgetown South” infrastructure project including a rail-to-rail and grade separation, and the construction of additional tracks. This should help improve service on the Milton line. “GO RER service includes peak-period, peak-direction service on weekdays every 15 minutes,” Ministry Spokesperson Andrea Ernesaks said in an email. Metrolinx is expected to increase trips along the Milton line by 30% over the next five years.
