An earthquake has struck Japan. It struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture with a magnitude of 7.3 at 6am local time. It hit 10km deep, and has triggered tsunami warnings, and advisories across the coast. The country’s national broadcaster NHK advised residents to seek higher ground. Media reports 5 people have been injured in northeastern Japan. Tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo. Crews are inspecting cooling units at the Fukushima nuclear power plant after the quake triggered a shutdown in one of the cooling systems.
Update: 22/11/16 10am: Japanese authorities have lifted tsunami warnings. The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of shifting sea levels. “Slight sea-level changes may be observed in coastal regions, but no tsunami damage is expected.” Only minor injuries have been reported in the affected area.
