Oakville’s Madeline Schizas  may yet come home with a medal.  The women’s figure skater competed as part of the Team Figure Skating event at the 2022 Olympic games in Beijing, China.

The 18-year old competed in the Women’s short program, and scored a team high 16 points to bring Canada up to fourth position.  Canada finished fourth in the final round of competition behind the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) who won bronze.

The medal ceremony in the team event has been delayed due to what media reports describe as an “emerging legal issue.”  Speculation is that one of the Russian skaters tested positive on a drug test.  “Let’s for the sake of understanding, wait for some explanations either from our sports officials or from the IOC,” Kremlin Spokesman Dimitry Peskov said according to the CBC.  If an ROC athlete tests positive, it’ll disqualify the entire team.  Canada would move up into third place.

If this is the case, it would be Team Canada’s ninth medal, and sixth bronze.  To keep track of Team Canada, including Halton’s nine athletes visit the official website.
