The Town of Milton reported 103 employees on the “sunshine list” in 2018. An increase of 55 employees over 2017. According to the Town, a large majority of the increase is attributed to retroactive payments from 2015 – 2018, paid in 2018, and related to collective bargaining agreements with Milton Fire Department staff.
Through the Association of Municipalities of Ontario the Town of Milton has highlighted that arbitration awards for emergency services costs across Ontario are increasing faster than other municipal services, the cost of living, and the rate of inflation. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario has proposed that arbitration criteria be implemented that includes the economic and fiscal impact of an arbitrator’s decision.
“The Town of Milton values its employees who contribute to the quality of life in Milton and the safety of our community,” said CAO Bill Mann. “Municipalities across Ontario are challenged by balancing the impacts of interest arbitration with other programs and services through the annual budget process.”
