Dressing to walk into an interview — and out with a job

Picking an interview outfit is an important part of making a good first impression. To make yours count, check out these tips.

Don’t forget details. Often unnoticed details can create a subconscious profile in the mind of your potential employer before you even get a chance to shake their hand. A creased shirt could imply messy and rushed, while neatly polished nails can say you’re organized and have good attention to detail.

Balanced clothes. It doesn’t matter if you decide to go for a dress, skirt or trousers, as long as the fit is right and appropriate. Black and white pieces are often a go-to, but this means candidates often blend into one monochromatic blur. Try wearing one statement piece of color to grab the attention of the interviewer and help make you memorable. Often, during post-interview discussions they will zone in on those details: “I liked the girl with the red scarf.”

Accessorize wisely. When it comes to accessories, less is more. Keep it simple and classy. The perfect way to achieve this is with the right watch. Something like MVMT’s Lexington watch is elegant and delicate for the right balance of professionalism, personality and style. Team this up with a modest pair of earrings and you’re good to go.

Comfort is key. Make sure you’re comfortable in your outfit of choice, and if you’re wearing heels, that you can walk in them. You want the full attention to be on the interview at hand and your next brilliant answer, rather than self-consciously fidgeting and pulling down at the hem of your skirt. Most importantly, make sure you like the outfit you’re wearing. If you can look in the mirror and think “I look good,” you’d be shocked at how that mindset can make you walk a few inches taller and give you that extra boost of confidence that will shine through during your interview.
