The Milton Film Festival has announced its selection of the eight feature films which will be screened at the fourth annual event over the weekend of January 27-29, 2017 at the Milton Centre for the Arts.
The film line-up was officially unveiled at a press event on Tuesday, November 29th at the Milton Centre for the Arts by Jennifer Smith, director and committee chair for the Festival, and author and former film critic Ron Base, who serves as the Festival’s host and MC. Films were chosen by the Festival’s Selection Committee which includes Smith, Base, programmer Katherine Pearce, and committee vice-chair Carmen Martino.
“Our selection process is truly a collaborative effort” noted Smith, “bringing people of differing tastes and points of view together to discuss, sometimes debate, and eventually distilling a ‘short’ list of 30-40 titles down to eight remarkable and truly distinctive films.
“What this means for our audience is a curated selection of films that truly has something for everyone.” Smith then turned the podium over to Ron Base, who revealed the list of eight feature films to be screened over the three days of the Festival, opening with Weirdos – the latest film from renowned Canadian director Bruce McDonald (Highway 61, Hard Core Logo).
Weirdos is a real coup for Milton as it will be screening here even before it’s broader theatrical release in February.
In addition to revealing the eight feature films, Ron Base confirmed the attendance of special guest filmmaker Megan Murphy, an experienced actor and a well known radio host in her native Peterborough. Murphy will be presenting her independent documentary feature, ‘Murphy’s Law’ on January 29th and will be participating in a Q&A session after the film.
Other guest filmmakers and actors, as well as the list of short films to be presented, will be revealed at a later date.
Also announced was a new partnership initiative with Laurier University. As part of it’s ongoing effort to present programming that offers a deeper understanding and appreciation of film, the Milton Film Festival has invited faculty and alumni from Laurier’s Film Studies Program to conduct a speakers’ panel over the lunch break on the Saturday of the Festival in the Escarpment Hall. The topic of discussion is yet to be determined but is sure to be fascinating. This part of the program will be presented free to the public.
