App Helps Police Locate Missing Hikers

By: Laura Steiner

Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is grateful for an app that helped them locate a group of hikers

On July 3, 2021 two hikers got lost on trails in the Kelso Conservation Area.  They called police for assistance, and HRPS’ Communications’ Bureau was able to locate them using the app, known as what3words

A second incident happened on the same day when hikers went missing at Hilton Falls.  They didn’t have the app, and were safely located with the use of the K9 unit.

HRPS is asking residents who use the hiking trails download the what3words app.  The app divides the world into three metre squares, giving each a unique “what3words address.  The address gives callers a way to identify where help is needed, and allows police to dispatch critical resources in time sensitive situations.

The App is available in over 40 languages for both Android and IOS systems.  It can also be downloaded through the online map.
