February 8, 2016 is the Chinese New Year. British Columbia Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism Teresa Wat released a statement recognizing its importance, and the start of the Year of the Monkey.
“As we mark the Lunar New Year with festivities throughout the province, let us take a moment to reflect on the events of the past year and look ahead to new opportunities in the future,” Wat said.
The Monkey is the ninth in a cycle of 12 Zodiac animals on the Chinese calendar. It’s celebrated by Chinese communities worldwide.
Trudeau Recognizes Chinese New Year
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took the opportunity to extend New Years’ wishes as well recognizing the Fire Monkey. He called it “an animal that symbolizes cleverness, wittiness, intelligence and curiosity.”
Trudeau’s statement continued: “We know the that Canada is a strong and resilient nation because of its diversity.” The next Chinese New Year will be held on January 28, 2017.
