Oakville Mayor Rob Burton has resigned his post as the Chair of the Halton Police Board.  The announcement comes as part of the ongoing controversy over Police Chief Stephen Tanner’s trip outside of Canada.

“I regret sincerely that I focused at the time on the ways the chief’s trip qualified as essential,” Burton said in a statement.  Burton approved Tanner’s travel to Florida on “personal business.”

Burton’s statement continued. “I should have recommended against it because it could generate public concern about me not setting a higher example than the rules and guidelines actually called for. ”

When asked over the weekend why he approved the trip, Burton responded in an email that the trip wasn’t “non-essential”.  New modelling data indicates the possibility that the province may see up to 100 deaths/ day by the end of February, with ICU surging to 1,000 patients.  The Premier is expected to introduce new measures later this week.
