High Speed Internet Coming to Rural Milton

By: Laura Steiner

Milton’s rural area will soon start seeing signs of high speed Internet.  The Provincial Centre for Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN) awarded the project for Mage Networks that will enable approximately 350 homes in the  Brookville area to access high speed Internet.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical need for reliable, accessible high-speed internet in our rural communities,” said Regional Chair Gary Carr.  The project will include implementation of wireless technology that will be fixed to hydro poles and streetlight poles in order to give residents standard speeds of 100Mbps download and 100Mbps upload speeds.

It follows the announcement of $1 billion investment from the provincial government.  “This is part of our commitment to improve access to reliable internet for every home, business, and farm in Ontario, Milton MPP Parm Gill said.  $63.3 million will be invested in the project over the next five years.

“Access in rural communities hinges on the innovation and investment of telecommunications service providers and for that reason, we really look forward to the outcome of this project.  This could be a game changer for rural communities.” Milton Mayor Gord Krantz said.  To learn more about the project visit their website.
