Milton Mayor Gord Krantz becomes Canada’s Longest Serving Mayor

Mayor Gordon A. Krantz reached a major milestone today in his career as Mayor of Milton, Ontario. With over 35 years as the head of Council for the Town of Milton, he has surpassed Hazel McCallion as the longest, continuously serving Mayor of a major municipality in Canada.

Originally recruited as a part-time firefighter, Gord Krantz has served the Milton community since 1960. In 2010, he celebrated 50 years of continuous service with the Town of Milton. He is currently serving his 20th term of office, with eight as Councillor and 12 as Mayor. Over the course of his career, Mayor Krantz has seen Milton’s population grow from 5,000 to its current population of approximately 130,000.

Elected as a Local Councillor to Milton Town Council in 1965 and as Mayor in 1980, Gord Krantz has guided Milton through more than three decades of preparing for and managing growth. His leadership, and vision has positioned Milton as one of the most educated, diverse and fastest-growing communities.

Mayor Krantz has also been an essential contributor to Halton Region by serving on Halton Regional Council since 1980, Conservation Halton Board of Directors since 1973, Niagara Escarpment Commission for three terms, and various ad-hoc and standing committees. He is also a founding member and strong supporter of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance and plays an active role in attracting investment to the Town of Milton.

Mayor Krantz has shaped Milton’s landscape with projects such as the restoration of Milton’s Town Hall Facility and the Mill Pond, development of the 401 Industrial Park, new residential build projects, and community facilities including the Milton Leisure Centre, Milton Sports Centre, Milton Centre for the Arts, and the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.

A lifelong resident of Milton, his personal experiences include owning and operating his own business Krantz Fuels (1961 – 1980), part-time firefighting (1960 – 1980), Prosperity One Credit Union Board of Directors since 1971, and membership with the Royal Canadian Legion since 1963. Mayor Krantz and his wife Olive have one son and one daughter, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
