Ontario is taking the next steps on the GTA West Corridor. The province announced it would proceed with a “preferred route” for the highway.
“The greater Golden Horseshoe is an economic driver for the province and addressing transportation needs in this region is essential to the competitiveness of our economy,” Transportation Caroline Mulroney said. The preferred route takes it from the King Road area in Vaughn, south to the 407-401 interchange in Halton Hills. The approved plan is for a 400 series highway with 4-6 lanes, and separate infrastructure for transit and passenger stations.
The project was first conceived as the Mid-Peninsula highway that would hook up the Fort Erie area with the 407 north of Burlington. The provincial Liberals cancelled the planned highway 2018, citing the findings of an advisory panel that recommended in favour of a narrower corridor.
The provincial Progressive Conservatives revived the project’s Environmental Assessment in June, 2019 through a motion in the Legislature. ” The GTA West corridor will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve the movement of people and goods across the province,” Mulroney said. The area’s traffic is expected to exceed 300,000 vehicles a day. The Environmental assessment should be completed by the end of 2022.
