The province has promised a $3 billion investment in post-secondary education. The investment was announced as part of the 2018 provincial budget.
The money will be spread over 10 years. It will include university-led campuses in Milton, and Brampton Ontario. It follows $1 billion dollar investment in post-secondary education in the 2017 provincial budget. “Investments will support institutions to update classrooms and labs, and undertake facility retrofits and other renewal projects to enhance students’ learning experience,” Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development Spokesperson Yanni Dagonas said.
Wilfrid Laurier University has been working with the Town of Milton for the last eight years on bringing a 150 acre post-secondary campus to Milton. When completed, it will be part of the 400 acre complex Milton Education village.
The City of Brampton revealed it was partnering with Ryerson University on a potential post-secondary campus in 2017. No final site has been chosen for the university, but Brampton City Council has committed $50/ year for 10 years towards a final proposal. The provincial government has previously committed $180 million towards the two campuses.
“The Ministry is currently finalizing its review of the proposals for post-secondary expansion in Milton, and Brampton, and details regarding the locations will be shared in the near future,” Dagonas said. Both campuses are expected to focus on STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Arts, and Math) education. Laurier is partnering with Conestoga College in Milton, while Ryerson will partner with Sheridan College.
