The panel reviewing Canadian National Rail’s (C.N. Rail) plans for an Intermodal facility in Milton has requested more information. In a letter dated May 5, 2017 from Chairman Lesley Griffiths they have requested information including the Environmental Impact statement, and an application under Section 98 of the Canada Transportation Act, dealing with the construction.
The CN Intermodal is a proposed development from CN Rail. Its location is in southwest Milton bounded by Tremaine Rd, Lower Base Line, Highway 25 and Britannia Rd. It’s purpose will be to shift goods from trains to trucks in order to ship east across the Greater Toronto Area. When opened it will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The development was announced in March, 2015. CN Rail is a federally regulated company, and as such has chosen to go through the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA). This is their second attempt at a facility in the Milton area. Such projects are usually subjected to the planning process regulated by the municipalities, and province.
The three-person review panel was appointed by Environment Minister Catherine McKenna to examine the project proposal, and look at its approval. Their detailed letter indicates the need for more information on alternate truck routes, and alternative entrance locations.
The panel held a 2-day orientation session earlier this year in order to acquaint itself with area stakeholders, and potential issues. The hearings are likely to take place later this year. For more information including a timeline, and viewing the orientation session’s webcast visit this link.
Update: 28/05/2017: Panel Reviewing EIS
The Review Panel continues work on evaluating the Environmental Impact statement. If they find there is enough information they could proceed to a public hearing. More information on that here
