Town of Milton Freezing Rain Update

Environment Canada has placed the Town of Milton is under a Freezing Rain warning for the today. A period of ice pellets and freezing rain is accepted to last throughout the day.  Periods of freezing rain are expected to last into Thursday morning.

The freezing rain could make travelling conditions challenging, as untreated surfaces such as pathways, parking lots, and roads may become icy.  Conditions could lead to potential utility outages as  ice buildups may lead to falling tree branches.

All schools in Halton are closed for the day, and buses cancelled.  Sheridan College has closed all of its campuses as of 11 a.m.  McMaster has closed for the day as well as Wilfird Laurier University.

Town of Milton Updates Freezing Rain Response:

Town crews applied brine to Class 1 and 2 Town and Regional Roads as well as hills and bridge decks in anticipation of this event. Town crews are currently salting, sanding and scraping Regional, arterial and collector routes as well as sidewalks.

In events like this, temperatures in the rural area can differ from our urban centre.  The rural area tends to be colder, whereas our urban centre is generally warmer.  This can create a contrast of how we deal with these different micro climates within Milton.

We can experience very different weather patterns, which affects how we treat our road network.  We use commercial weather monitoring stations in these different areas to monitor the air and road temperatures in addition to our legislative road patrollers.  Use of these tools allows us to make the most informed decisions on how to best deal with these types of situations.

Residential roads are plowed after the priority areas have been cleared and 10cm of snow accumulation has occurred. If you must drive, give yourself plenty of time to get around. Please remember to allow the plow and keep roads clear of parked cars during a winter event.
