Town Of Milton Invites Feedback on 2018 municipal budget

The Town of Milton’s proposed 2018 budget focuses on the delivery of core services and infrastructure, while investing for the future. The 2018 budget maintains current services levels and has a proposed 7.5% tax impact for the Town’s share of property taxes.  When combined with the potential Regional and Educational tax impacts, the overall change is an estimated 3.34%.

“Consistent with the findings of the 2017 Fiscal Impact Study undertaken for the Town, a key outcome for this budget and future budgets is ensuring that adequate resources are available to extend existing services into new growth areas and provide funding to mitigate the shortfall in asset renewal,” said Deputy CAO/CFO Linda Leeds. “This budget lays the groundwork to meet this year’s needs while taking important steps to ensuring a fiscally sound future.”

The 2018 budget implements strategies to grow the annual investment in infrastructure renewal in order to support the continuation of service delivery in the future. It also provides for immediate investment in the community, including $32.6 million in new road construction and road reconstruction, as well as funding for the construction of the new Sherwood Community Centre, the building of Fire Station No. 5 and the reconstruction of Fire Station No. 1.

“Milton’s local tax rate is 34.1% lower than neighbouring municipalities in the GTA,” said CAO Bill Mann. “The 2018 budget will see the Town retain its position as one of the most affordable communities in the province.”

As part of the budget preparation process, survey results and public input are paired with information about forecasted growth, infrastructure requirements, as well as program costs and revenues. The comprehensive budget process allows decision-making to consider balancing service levels with sustainability and affordability.

The Committee of the Whole will meet on December 4 and 5 (if needed) to deliberate the budget. Residents wishing to delegate at the meeting must register before 10 am on Monday, December 4.
