In the early morning hours of December 21, Halton Police and Halton Hills Fire received a call for a barn fire in the area of Arkell Road and First Nassagaweya Line, Milton.
Emergency services arrived at the Firstline Training Centre and assisted barn staff in urgently removing horses from the blaze.
Ultimately 38 of a total of 40 race horses were rescued. Two died. Three had to be euthanized because of their injuries.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated; however, it is believed that it originated in the area of farming machinery.

Woodbine Entertainment Extends Condolences:
Woodbine Entertainment Group has extended its condolences to the First Line Training Centre, and Trainer Mark Steacy. “Everyone at Woodbine Entertainment was devastated to wake up Friday to the news of the barn fire at First Line Training Centre,” said Jessica Buckley, President of Woodbine Mohawk Park. Mohawk has offered to make its barn area available for the horses.
