The province of Ontario will extend its Declaration of Emergency until May 12, 2020. The decision was announced following a special session of the Ontario Legislature. The decision allows the province to extend all emergency orders passed to-date.
“During these unprecedented times, we cannot let our guard down. The actions being taken by everyone to stay home and practice physical distancing are making a difference, but we are not out of the woods yet,” Premier Doug Ford said. Orders passed include the banning of gatherings over five people, the closure of all non-essential workplaces, and outdoor amenities. The full list of orders is available on the website
“I these unprecedented times, our government is doing everything in its power to support our municipal, policing and community partners,” Solicitor General Sylvia Jones, said. Among the legislation changed is the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities Act to allow for a deferral in OSAP payments, and the Education Act that will see boards of education continuing to charge fees on new construction.
Publicly funded schools will remain closed beyond the previously announced date of May 4, 2020. Education Minister Stephen Lecce will have more information within the next few days.
