Milton Fire Department to Take Zero Tolerance Approach to Open Air Burning Violations

Effective immediately, the Milton Fire Department is taking a zero tolerance approach to open air burning violations, to enforce fire safety in the community. Failure to obtain a permit before burning or failure to follow fire regulations, may result in fines.

Over the past week, the Milton Fire Department has responded to numerous calls in relation to unsafe open air burning and grass fires. While open air burning can be safe, enjoyable and convenient, it must be done within the parameters of the Open Air Burning By-law.

Due to COVID-19, burn permits are only available online through the Milton Fire Department’s website until further notice. The cost of a permit is $50 and is valid for the calendar year. Permits will only be issued to property owners located in the Town of Milton. Tenants and contractors require written authorization from the property owner to obtain a permit.

“Open air burning is legal in Milton, provided that residents follow the by-law and obtain a valid permit,” said Kevin Foster, Acting Fire Chief. “All open fires, including backyard chimineas and outdoor fireplaces, require a burn permit. Those who forgo obtaining a permit could face penalties.”

The Milton Fire Department can issue invoices for response to burning permit by-law violations. The rate is  approximately $575 per truck.

Permits are available for three types of open air burning. Outdoor Fire Container permits cover chimineas and outdoor fireplaces. Brush Fire permits are needed for larger fires that require more safety clearance and Agricultural Land permits deal with burning fields for crop maintenance.
