The Canada-US border is now closed to non-essential travel. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement following negotiations between the trading partners. The closure will be in effect from 12:01 am March 21, 2020- to 12pm on April 21, 2020.
“These temporary measures will enable us to protect the health and safety of Canadians, while ensuring the flow of critical supplies, people, and infrastructure between our two countries,” Public Safety and Security Minister Bill Blair said. The government’s recommendation to self-isolate upon return will be repeated to travellers at official border crossings.
There is also an agreement in place to return irregular migrants to the United States (US). “With COVID-19 continuing to spread, the health and safety of Canadians is our top priority,” Prime Minister Trudeau said. Those already in Canada will be able to continue making their way through the asylum process.
This collaborative and reciprocal measure between Canada and the United States will restrict non-essential travel across the border, including for tourism and recreation. Canadian and American citizens and permanent residents who are currently visiting each other’s country can still return home.
