The Canadian Union of Public Employee (CUPE) voted this week to strike beginning Monday October 7, 2019. The union represents non-teaching staff in Ontario schools including Educational assistants, custodians, and Early Childhood Educators.
The Halton District School Board (HDSB) will not be accepting new rental requests from community groups, and cancel existing permits. Schools will remain open. Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) will close their schools in the event of a strike.
The Town of Milton is going to offer day camps to help with childcare needs. Registration is available beginning this afternoon, and spaces are available on a first-come, first serve basis. Camps will run from 8am-4pm at the Milton Sports’ Centre. If schools re-open the program will be cancelled, and refunds will be automatically processed.
Negotiators are expected to sit down beginning at 4:30 pm today to continue talks under a communications blackout. Among the issues are absenteeism, and job security. Workers are given 11 sick days at full pay and another 120 days at 90%. Talks are expected to last through the weekend.
Update: 6/10/2019: CUPE Reaches Tentative Deal
An agreement has been reached between the Council of Trusttees’ Association (CTA) and the provincial government to end a potential strike by CUPE workers Monday morning. “All the parties worked hard together at the table to reach a fair and responsible agreement that will keep students in the classroom,” OPBSA President Cathy Abraham said.
The details of the agreement are confidential until it’s ratified.
