Ontario is partnering with Apple and Rogers on an initiative to help students learn better at home. The province is buying Ipads, and distributing them through the school boards.
“This important partnership will enable students to learn while making technology accessible for those that truly need it,” Education Minister Stephen Lecce. Distribution began last week. The Ipads will come pre-equipped with Rogers LTE wireless data.
Apple is providing ongoing support to teachers, parents, and students with resources that support learning and working from home. Over 21,000 iPads have been so far distributed. Rogers is also working with schools on providing low-cost Internet to subsidized tenants. “For some of the most vulnerable members of our society, accessing online learning tools at home is an added burden at a time when there is already a lot of stress,” Rogers for Business President Dean Prevost said.
“We are glad to work alongside Ontario’s Ministry of Education and school boards to help students access the technology they need to stay connected,” Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted. Schools will remain closed beyond May 4, 2020, and no return date has been announced.
Halton Board Holds out Hope for Commencement
HDSB Board director holds out some hope that cancelled high school graduations may go ahead. “We are looking at alternatives for your commencement at least,” he said in a video posted to Twitter April 15, 2020.
