Trudeau Speaks on Portapique Shooting

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken out on the shooting that happened in Nova Scotia over the weekend.

“Our hearts go out to the people who have lost loved ones, and to the RCMP family mourning a fallen officer,” Trudeau said.  18 people are reported dead including RCMP Constable Heidi Stephenson.

The shooting started Saturday night in Portapique Nova Scotia, a community located 30 minutes north of Halifax.  The gunman has been identified as 51 year old Gabriel Wortman. He covered a 100km area dressed as an RCMP officer, reported to be driving mocked-up cruiser.  The shooter was killed in a confrontation with police outside a gas station.  A second RCMP officer is among the injured. Also deceased: Lisa McCully, Kristen Beaton, Heather O’Brien, Jolene Oliver, Aaron Tuck, and Emily Tuck.

The RCMP has set up a condolence email for Constable Stevenson and the injured officer.  Email: RCMP.Condolences-Condoleances.GRC@rcmp.grc.ca.  A virtual vigil is scheduled for Friday at 7pm through a Facebook group: Colchester Supporting our Community.

RCMP Estimates “in excess of 19 victims”

RCMP Officers are attending 16 different crime scenes over the 100 km area. The death toll has increased to 19.  Authorities are dealing with five structure fires, and suggest they might find victims inside them.  The investigation is expected to take months.  They are not looking for any more suspects.
