Travelling? Here’s what you need to know to stay safe

Many of us are starting to plan for a fall retreat or a winter getaway. Whether travelling solo or bringing the whole family along, here are some tips from Western Union to help your trip be both safe and memorable:

  • Be adventurous yet cautious with accommodations. There are many alternative lodging options these days, including apartment rentals, home rentals, villas and even castles. Book your property through a reputable provider and check for reviews and ratings to ensure quality and legitimacy. Many sites offer built-in tools to safely manage deposits and payments. Never send funds through money transfer to anyone you haven’t met in person.
  • Protect your passport. Photocopy or email yourself a scanned image of your passport as insurance for one of the most valuable items you’ll have with you when traveling. This will help speed up the process if you lose it mid-travel. Carry your passport or store it in a safe — never leave it unattended.
  • Take lots of photos. With today’s camera-ready smart devices, it’s never been easier to pack light and still capture your vacation memories. Be sure to fasten and secure your camera or smartphone while you’re not using it. Consider using a money belt to keep it close and prevent pickpockets. Be sure to back up your photos regularly.
