The Town of Milton has started installation of additional signage within pedestrian crossovers to make them more visible to motorists; all crossovers will be outfitted with the supplementary signage in the coming weeks.
The flexible signs direct motorists to “Stop for pedestrians within crosswalk” and are positioned between lanes of traffic in the crossovers. They are being installed in response to concerns from residents related to motorists failing to stop at the crossovers. Motorists only need to come to a stop when pedestrians are in the crosswalk.
“The safety of pedestrians is a priority so we are making the crossovers more obvious for motorists so they stop their vehicles accordingly,” said Mayor Gord Krantz. “The Town is investing in these additional signs, which exceed the requirements of the Ontario Traffic Manual, to ensure pedestrian safety at crossovers.”
This newest crossover initiative follows the Town’s partnership with Halton Regional Police for February’s Project Safe Crossing campaign to improve safety at pedestrian crossovers. Officers with Halton Regional Police Service were stationed during peak hours at rotating pedestrian crossover locations. Drivers and cyclists who failed to stop were cautioned and given literature about how to lawfully navigate crossovers. After that, and for the balance of the month, traffic citations were issued.
Drivers are fined $150 to $500 and three demerit points for offences at pedestrian crossings, school crossings and at crosswalks where there are traffic signals. Pedestrians who fail to properly negotiate the crossovers are warned and/or ticketed.
