Milton MPP Parm Gill announced a $745,100 Grow Grant for the Milton Community Resource Centre (MCRC). MPP Gill was joined by the Chair of OTF’s local Grant Review Team, Mark Egbedeyi-Emmanuel, and is proud to see how work is progressing on the arts programming this three-year grant has helped make possible.
“The funding provided to the Milton Community Resource Centre for arts-based learning opportunities by the province of Ontario will enrich the lives of almost 30,000 people in our community through arts, culture, and heritage,” Gill said
Launched in 2013, the collaborative project involves MCRC and the Halton Resource Connection. Its concept is simple: integrate artists into the early years learning environment. This new grant will expand the Centre’s innovative Artists and Children Together (ACT) Initiative, open a Community Art Studio and engage with Indigenous artists to develop culturally sensitive arts programming. Funds will be used to hire two full-time artists, a part-time facilitator and a coordinator. In addition, it will help cover workshop and training costs, art supplies for the young people in the programs, renovations to create the studio and purchasing of equipment, as well as some administrative costs.
The program was started with seed money from the Trillium Foundation. “Support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has allowed us to develop, implement and evaluate our Artist and Children Together Initiative. By inviting artists into the classroom to work alongside of our educators, we offer children creative ways of seeing and engaging with the world and making their ideas visible, said MCRC Executive Director Rebecca Barrows Vrankulj.
