Ontario has released a new legislation that aims to increase housing supply and choice for families and individuals alike in communities big and small across our province.
The More Homes for Everyone Act, as it is called, includes key measures to reduce red tape, remove hurdles to new housing approvals, and end bureaucratic barriers for awaiting families.
The law is aimed at accelerating the construction of new houses that are critically needed as Canada grows ever more in population with many migrating to city centers for employment and business.
Ontario Home Builders’ Association president Bob Schickedanz said that he was pleased with the announcement and said it charted a path forward to create the ‘right environment’ to accelerate the delivery of new housing for Ontarians of all ages.
He said that this legislation makes important planning and development approval changes, more appropriately funds and resources the Ontario Land Tribunal and incentivizes municipalities to make timely decisions so that families can move into their new homes faster.
George William, a tenant in Milton, has welcomed the legislation. He is currently living in a basement in Milton. He hopes that the new measures will one day enable him to own a property of his own and move out of the basement.
Ravi Kumar, an immigrant from Dubai who now resides in Milton, also was hopeful that the legislation would not only help in accelerating the building of new houses, but would also create easiness in renovation of old housing units.
Affordable housing remains one of Canada’s main challenges, pushing the governments to take policy decisions and introduce new legislations for tackling the housing crisis.
